My Synopsis... Reflection 6

E-Learning is Information Technology Communication in Teaching

This reflective synopsis will outline the learning journey I went through as a student, which allowed me to have an understanding of how I could implement digital technologies into classroom practice as a learning manager. The key learning experience of exploring online space such as web 2.0 tools wiki spaces, blogs, digital tools ect taught me, the importance of discovering for myself, thinking critically, reflecting, what worked what didn’t and what could I improve. The scaffolding that was delivered with the content allowed me to process at my own pace, while having the resources and network of other students to help me when I needed. This ensured my learning journey was successful. The key is that pedagogy, technology, and Content are all intertwined. E-learning has transformed the way we learn . It is exciting, stimulating, affordable, collaborative interactive, creative and imperative to teaching and engaging students in the 21st century.

Negligent teaching is the implications of NOT using ICT  . As a secondary teacher I will develop knowledge in a specialized area that caters to year levels. Before technology secondary teaching didn't allow for integration or sharing of resources among discipline areas. Education was considered to be a Silo. (Allen & Smith, 2010, p.49) Technology in the 21st century has evolved, traditional approaches to teaching where students are memorizing facts without making links no longer work. School environments need to change, technology has captured students’ attention, learning managers require a new set of skills to gain students interest and imagination (2010 p.50)through this course I discovered digital technologies are integral to learning in the 21st century. We live in a global society with technology at our fingertips, by embedding technology meaningfully into teaching we are allowing learners to understand content on a deeper level, they can problem solve, remember what they see, hear touch and explore, they can share ideas, analysis, reflect, question, work independently or foster relationships with students to strengthen understanding .Technology caters for ALL levels of development and ability.  I learnt it is essential that students and teachers understand the importance of safe ethical work practice with web tools, and understand the guidelines and consequences, to ensure the safety and identity of students while working on the web. It is also important to teach students about copyright and reference. Everything placed on the web is a footprint for life.(refer blog week 6)

E-Learning according to Sir Ken Robinson is using information technology to engage and enhance extended pedagogy in a sound flexible innovative way. When I become a Learning manager I need to ensure I use digital technologies, following Australian curriculum guidelines, in a planned purposeful creative way, using pedagogical strategies, to scaffold learning in a safe ethical manner. ( Refer to blog de Bono’s hats/ web safety  blog week 2)this will ensure students are engaged and achieve successful learning outcomes. Understanding learning styles helps the learning process. Howard Gardeners’ Multiple intelligent tests is one way to profile a learner along with, observation formal and informal testing and using the 9 learning management questions, this will guarantee I have a deeper understanding of my students needs and strengths. I have  learned ICT is positioned to cater for ALL learning styles and ability. It can be social or individual work, sharing collaborative across, local state and international borders. ICT is visual, auditory and interactive to enhance the experience  accessing information in a variety of ways. It is essential to use the right pedagogical tool and technology to engage in the content.

My experiences while working with the digital tools allowed me to analysis how I would embed technology in the classroom ensuring I understood and applied TPACK.correctly. (Refer blog week 3)  The frame work of Technology Pedagogy And Content Knowledge is essential to the online digital environment of learning. It is important that classroom topics blend and connect students to a variety of modal resources .It is important as a learning manager to ask questions, reflect on learning outcomes, what worked, what didn’t, what can be done better, were the students engaged in the topic, content and how I can bring prior knowledge into new content? I also learnt the process of Blooms taxonomy and followed the steps when creating a lesson plan (Refer blog week 3 )   (Knowledge, comprehension, application, Analysis, synthesis, Evaluation,) It allows for higher order thinking planning problem solving and clarifies new knowledge and thinking is integral to understanding.

The learning theory behind ICT, is working towards enhancing and engaging ALL learners. Underpinning everything is Piage and Vygotsky’ theories of; Behaviorism, Constructivism, Cognitivism and Connectivism .Learning is founded upon social interaction, culture, physical, virtual, and sensory environments. The brain stores knowledge, it is a mental process storing information long term, short term, chunking, reinforcing, practicing, questioning the how to and where to find knowledge, share knowledge, and reflecting, all supports how we learn.(refer blog week 2)
What does the future hold? With our globally changing diverse world I must ensure I embrace change, continue to fill my toolbox of resources ,be a lifelong learner who takes calculated risks, is creative and  implements technology and pedagogy within curriculum content Who engages student learning by sharing and working collaboratively using ICT.

                                                                                                                                       Mobile Learning
...

We have explored many tools in the past 5 weeks and reflected on affordances in the classroom in collaboration with curriculum This week we examined the use of Mobile Learning...It is not just about Mobiles ... The portability and accessibility of Ipads and Ipods in education is growing. They are inexpensive, personalized, and support a massive amount of applications. The 21 century learner has grown up connected to technology...There are 1.2 billion mobile devices are produced  every  year. Ipads  and Ipods are now integrated into most schools . First I will look at

1. Mobile Phones...

The capability of mobiles is not just about connecting to friends and family to have a chat...The tools and applications available on a phone are numerous enabling access to the internet, to gather  information, social network, multimedia, compass, GPS, calculator, recording they are a mini  pocket size computer  that is portable anywhere. The mobile is continuing to evolve and become more affordable and is often a first choice for internet access.

Using mobiles in the Classroom...

Mobiles enable teachers and learning mangers in the 21st century to be lifelong learners who embrace  ‘creativity, content knowledge, and technology. As a new learning manager I need to ensure I link traditional teaching approaches to multiple intelligences (Howard Gardner 1975) and then apply related content, balancing digital strategies, tools and activities. Ensuring I use structured pedagogy with clear guide lines, so students are engaged and using phones appropriately .This will facilitate students to develop a deeper knowledge, using tools that are creative interactive and  something they ALL  have and use every day. Vygotsky Theory (1962) promotes learning, where students engage actively. Mobile Technology is evolving,  the phone function is secondary to the other capabilities . Education needs to embrace change. 21 Century learners , engage  with WHAT THEY KNOW...
    MOBILES: Globally changing our world,
    * Expanding and challenging students Knowledge

*Be Progressive thinkers  be creative and mindful use  strategic pedagogy

*Using technology meaningfully TPACK  for specific content

*Connective learning theory and collaboration of ideas

*Guidelines and monitor as appropriate learning tool.

Schools administration  are using text to send bulk information to parents/emergency evacuation/sports carnival cancelled/ this ensures parents receive instant messages therefore no issue of checking e-mail
I believe if we allow students to use mobiles in the class it will stop some of the behaviors that occur as we are negating the issue .Of course there will always be issues  involving in appropriate use ,where teachers will have to monitor but that is the same as students accessing web sites or playing games on the computer.
SAFE DIGITAL PEDAGOGY
Cyber bullying is a concern however this isn't a product of classroom content.
Social media such as face book already have an impact at schools where students are bullied.
Students are educated about safe ethical phone use within the classroom and playground (not to film or take a photo without consent.)  Education of appropriate safe ethical and legal practices is an ongoing school wide project teaching students about their digital footprint is imperative for safety and understanding everything is permanent.Consequence and expectation for inappropriate behavior.

Class task Film and technology compare and comparison  (year 10)

Introduce students to timeline of film: still films /black and white / silent movies ect
Generate class discussion on  genre of films/long shots close ups / panned shots / lighting ect
Have students divide into groups make a small movie 3 minutes(negotiated choice of topics)
Write up a story board    Some students film on phone / video camera /standard camera/ipad
Each film must have a long shot, close up,  wide view/ sound/ transitions/
Present films to class collaborate as a class
Have students rate quality of film on phone compared to quality of video  camera/ standard camera
Write down positives and negatives of each tool .
analysing the techniques and conventions used in different genres, mediums and modes (ACEEN044)
·        considering how the conventions of genres can be challenged, manipulated or parodied (ACEEN045)
·        examining how genres and their conventions have changed and adapted over time. (ACEEN046)

  Using Ipads  within a framework

Technology Pedagogy and Content Knowledge

The ipad is another fantastic tool that has captured the attention of students and educators. They are changing  the landscape how educators must teach to engage students.
Inspire, collaborate ,create, evaluate, analysis, problem solve ,build knowledge, developing higher order thinking

The IPAD  have numerous amounts of different applications that can be downloaded from the Web. Once again having all the amazing applications you could think of from digital media, video still shots  recording, editing tools the list is endless.
*Age appropriate (toddlers to university scholars)                                                                                                                *The learning is more accessible information at fingertips.
            * Interactive  for visual, audio, kinaesthetic learners                                                                                                     * Flexible to work outside he class room
*Store & display dozens of books
*Read write listen through play and learn bringing technology to life
            *Portable
            *Afforable
*Weightless ( compared to lugging 6 or 7 text books to class !!)
IPADs have created a new enthusiasm for learning, paperless, ( no the dog ate my homework stories ) students excited to do homework
         QR codes

What is a QR code? I knew they existed for items in shops and magazines but had no idea they could link to an information web site .It was very easy and straight forward to set up and if you had trouble there was online assistance to help . QR codes have unlimited potential in the 21st century .They offer  another way for students to access information .Students are able to use the QR code with their iPad ,Smartphone’s or a computer allowing quick access to information and sites .

As a teacher using the codes you could

·        Set up a link and direct students to view an item or start a project in another link without the use of a url.

·        Take students to websites without the need to type in an URL.

·        Have  different places in the class room for students to access on line video, websites that are curriculum content based

·       Attach to calendar for parents or students to access for  reminder of  events ,musical ,assessment week, excursions,

The opportunities are endless as it was a first go the price was free however for a small cost you could set up an account from $13.75 giving the teacher 5  codes or essentially an unlimited amount for $110 annually with 3 account users

Explain Everything is a fantastic app that can be used on an Ipad

Our school has had huge success ,particularly with students with learning difficulties .We have used it to record steps for cooking students can watch, listen and follow the steps as they cook  .The students I work with have created slide shows ,recorded their voice, film them self and watched back .It can be used as an instructional tool or a research engine . It is creative interactive and very easy to switch  access the web while working within the app.I love it.It allows the students to work at their pace and complex thinking, creates higher order thinking, and analysis. It is a tool that can be used safely and ethically without being made public.
I found this You-tube clip which gives so many great ideas in implementing in the classroom ...
